Thought for the Week...

Indulge yourself by being generous - help someone out, perform an act of kindness, offer a compliment.  The person who will feel most uplifted by you having done so is you.

Chapter Update

Dennis Clippinger - Serving Chapter President

Greetings,

The Labor Day weekend is now behind us and as our traditional summer hiatus comes to an end, the Southwest Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA is gearing up for a number of activities and events over the remaining months of 2019.  It’s time to get back into the swing of things.  And one of the best ways to do that is to attend our remaining General Membership Meetings.  We have excellent programs scheduled for both the September and November meetings.  If you hurry, you can still RSVP for the September luncheon, just let Marilyn know by noon on Friday, 6 September.  The program next week will be presented by Lorene Miller, Executive Director of the Center for Creative Living.  Hope to see you there.  And in November, Mayor Stan Booker will present his vision for the future for the City of Lawton.

Although we don’t have many scheduled activities over the summer, we have worked on several projects since our last meeting in May, so let me bring you up to speed on those.   A number of our Chapter members once again honored veterans by assisting with emplacing and recovering flags at every gravesite at the Fort Sill National Cemetery over Memorial Day Weekend.

As reported at May Annual Dinner, our Chapter was awarded a grant of $3750 by the MOAA Foundation for the Military Welcome Center (MWC) at the Lawton-Fort Sill Municipal Airport.  In addition, the Armed Forces Financial Network at Fort Sill provided a match of $1500.  As a result, over the summer we were able to replace all nine lounge chairs at the Military Welcome Center (MWC) at the Lawton Airport.  The MWC was also able to purchase a 12 outlet charging station for the Center.  If you haven’t been out lately, stop by soon and check it out.

We continue to work (mainly the effort of our Treasurer Leighton) to establish our scholarship fund as a separate 501c(3) organization.  This effort should be completed by the end of the year.

Also, on 19 September, we have secured a booth at Fort Sill’s 41st Annual Retiree Appreciation Day.  Our goal is to provide awareness of MOAA and our mission and to recruit new members.  If you attend the Retiree Appreciation Day, be sure to stop by our table.

And a final note: STILL SERVING.  A motto adopted by many Veterans and Veteran’s organizations.  And on that note, your Chapter needs some of YOU to serve.  The tour of duty for several of our officers will end this year.  The Treasurer and Secretary in particular have served for the past four years and are slated to leave their current Board positions.  I ask you to seriously consider filling one of these positions for your Chapter.  Please let Marilyn Janosko know that you are willing to serve.
