Chapter Update

Dennis Clippinger - Serving Chapter President

Greetings,

It’s just amazing how time flies sometimes. It seems like the holidays just ended and as I write this, the first month of the new year/decade is already in the books. The SW Oklahoma Chapter of MOAA is off to a great start in the New Year. Our first General Membership Meeting was held on 15 January with good attendance. After a delicious meal, I presented our annual MOAA Update for the SW Oklahoma Chapter. If you were not able to attend, the briefing slides are posted to this website. There is a lot of information on the slides (I will admit they are a little wordy), so you should be able to get the gist of the update. The briefing contains some “year in review” and some “looking forward” at both the National and local level, along with some current statistics and information. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Also presented in the briefing are the Chapter’s Goals and Objectives for this year. These are also posted to the website and I ask that each member take the time to read this document. The success of the Chapter is truly a team effort and will only happen if all members do what they can to accomplish every goal. I want to take this opportunity to highlight a few of those goals.

As I did last year, I will continue to emphasize growth of our Chapter. We did well last year, but we can do better. Overall, Chapter membership grew by four members with the growth coming in Associate members. This year I want to focus again on growing Regular members. It is extremely important that if you are eligible for National membership that you sign up. Basic National memberships are free. There is strength in numbers.

An important part of Chapter growth is retention! A number of our members are due to renew their Chapter membership this year. Please check with our Membership Chair if you are not sure. I would like to see as close to 100% retention as possible.

Another goal I would like to highlight is Chapter fundraising. As I mentioned during my update, the sense I have is that our members want to do more as a Chapter. Doing more sometimes requires funding and to that end I would like to hold several fundraisers each year. Our first fundraiser has been scheduled for 30 July, 1700-1900 at the VFW. More information will be coming later on how you can help with this event.

On 21 January, a hardy contingent of SWOK MOAA members joined forces with a large number of like minded individuals at the Fort Sill National Cemetery to participate in the annual cleanup of holiday wreaths and flowers. It was a fairly chilly morning, but as the Lawton Constitution reported, almost 150 volunteers were present and the task took only 37 minutes. My thanks to each of our members who took part in this effort.

Our next General Membership Meeting and luncheon will be held on 11 March at the Veteran’s Center on Flower Mound Road. Please make plans to attend this luncheon, the opportunity to eat lunch with the veteran’s living in the center is always one of the highlights of the year. As in previous years, our Chapter will be making a donation to the center at the meeting.

There are opportunities every month to volunteer in activities that add value to your Chapter membership. If you are looking for a place to fit in, just ask!

Still Serving!
